nv Vs. nvidia in xorg.conf -- Resolution Problems

I'm using Ubuntu on an HP Pavillion zd7000. The laptop is great and I love the setup and such, but I need hardware acceleration. When I run 'nvidia-glx-config enable' according to the how-to on Ubuntu.org, only one single thing changes in the xorg.conf file: the 'nv' driver line is replaced with the 'nvidia' driver line. When I start up X, the nVidia splash shows as if everything were normal, but then, when the actual X Session starts, the resolution drops down to a measly 1280x800, instead of the 1440x900 it should be. I'm utterly stumped. Even the 'Display' module in KDE reports the higer resolution with the NV module and the lower resolution with the nVidia module. Here's some sysinfo:

I'm sure this is just something I'm missing, but nonetheless. When I'm in the reduced resolution config, I /do/ have hardware acceleration; I checked the output of 'glxinfo'.

Set the driver to nvidia and in the same section, add this line:

Option "IgnoreEDID" "true"

EDID is the info that comes from your monitor and tells the video card what resolutions it should use. I've had the nvidia driver go conservative on me before, that should fix it. However, the usual disclaimer of running your monitor at a res higher than you should will cause damage does apply here.
