notebook that modem works ?

hey I have been looking at geting a notebook to run linux on in the p3 area around $500-600 or so. I havent found any notebooks so far that the modem will work in linux with ex dell c600. Anyways anyone know of a good linux compatible notebook that the modem will work in? I will be needing this because sometimes i will be out of range of wi-fi access and that will be the only way for me to get online ;)

Check out this website: http://www.linmodems.org/

It has a wealth of information on modems, especially those found in laptops.

I am running linux in an IBM T40. The modem was needed as I have a dial-up. A little bit of configuring was needed but it didn't take long.

The best thing is to identify the chipset of the modem and see where you need to go from there. All of this is covered at the website link above.

Very best,
Nick

Most laptops have at least one serial RS-232 port. You can always get an external serial modem... many times for under $50 US.

Clevo D270S.

Have only managed to get the modem working with a 2.4.XX kernel, and smart link driver 2.7.10.

Cheers
Amos
