They no longer have it. This is Fedora--if it works, it's boring, let's remove it and replace it with something broken.


Basically, Fedora broke sound in 2007, when they decided for some reason, to tie it into console kit. Now, if you install something like fluxbox, you have to edit /etc/security/console.perms.d/(forgot the file name in there). Or, at least broke it for those who don't take all the defaults.

It was a good tool that did the job. So it's gone.

Removed runlevel 3? I doubt it. Most servers never start X. Check by looking in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d. There should be symlinks. If there is, runlevel 3 is available. So edit /etc/inittab where it says
id:5:initdefault:

and make it say
id:3:initdefault:

then reboot. Runlevel 3 uses less resources than X - it just uses the kernel and bash. I always use runlevel 3, and type startx when I need X.
