I haven't had a problem of this nature for a while, often there's a setting somewhere that you need to change, so I'd start by trying something like 'alsamixer' in the terminal and making sure that your channels are unmuted, as sometimes the distro will set that by default, for some reason.
If that doesn't work, don't give up... Something will come along and help. Often if you change your web search a little bit it can yield vastly better results, although it's difficult to do that unless you have a better grounding in Linux sometimes.
Just a tip, though, it's a better idea not to post as much info as what you did unless someone asks for it, pertinent things are for example it's an HP nc6000 laptop with intel processor, Ubuntu 9.10, etc.
Thanks for answer me.
I unmuted all what was muted in alsa and still no sound. Can i install some version of linux with i will no have problems?I just need lap top for internet and multimedia.
For a new user Ubuntu, Mint (those two are very much alike) and Mandriva will probably be the easiest, although it is likely something trivial (once you figure out what the problem is) to make it work. Jumping distros to solve a minor problem isn't likely to be productive.
Sound never "just works" for me when I install a distro. But it's almost always the same issue, which is what was mentioned above. Try right-clicking on the speaker icon on your panel and you'll probably see something like "Open Volume Control" There's a good chance in there you might see something muted or with the volume turned down that you didn't see in alsamixer. Also (and I'm sure you've already done this) make sure that you have tried turning up the volume wheel or volume buttons on the laptop.
Finally if none of this helps, post the make and model of the laptop and the output of
Code:
lspci
and
Code:
lsmod
and be patient, someone is likely to have an answer for you that works!
i do it all but still nothing. After i put in USB flash i dont have volume icons,clock... on my desktop. And when i minimise my explorer i cant find them.

Ah, ok... I think I know what's happened to your icons and stuff, it sounds like the applet on the toolbar has just disappeared... Does the problem persist if you log out and then back in again, or reboot? If it does, then right-click on the place where the icons used to be, then click on "Add to panel" or something of that nature... it will then give you a list of things you can add, like a system tray, volume mixer, application switcher (which is what you need to find applications that have minimised), desktop workspace switcher and things like that...
As to the ubuntu version, I meant what release are you using, this will be 8.10, 9.4, something like that... I don't remember if there's a way to get Ubuntu to tell you what it is, possibly under the System menu (should be third one from the left on the top if my memory serves me correctly) there might be something like "About Ubuntu" which will give you details like that.
Hope this helps... Where are you from, if you don't mind my asking?

Ok, to reboot is simply to switch the computer off then on again. If the problem still persists after you log out and in again, that is very strange, it sounds as though your panels have disappeared... Could you possibly take a screenshot? You can upload it to http://imageshack.us/ then paste the link that it gives you here so we can have a look, it should give us a better idea of what's going on.
That's what I meant, yes, Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, i.e. it's the latest one. Your laptop isn't especially old or new, so hardware support shouldn't be an issue... How recently did you install Ubuntu? Have you tried other distributions at all?
What I'd suggest is to try a few LiveCDs, the Ubuntu CD should be one, another is Linux Mint, http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
and another is Fedora, http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora,
So if you boot off the liveCD (be careful if there's an option to boot off the CD or install) and the sound doesn't work for any of them then there might be a hardware problem, or it might just be that Linux doesn't support your sound hardware, which I doubt, because it seems like it's just a standard AC97 system. While you're looking at those LiveCDs, see if there's one that you like, I personally don't like Ubuntu that much, I use Mint, so you may want to simply backup your data and install a distro you like better, if Ubuntu is giving you problems.
i try to take screenshot but no work they just say FAILED TO OPEN SCREENSHOT.PNG FOR WRITING : PERMISSION DENIED
i install ubuntu before 2 weeks.
My laptop had 512 ram but before 5 months my memory was disappeared and now i have about 300 ram.Can this be a problem????
I will try to install http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php now
According to what you have posted, you do have the correct module for your sound card. Try typing sudo alsamixer -V all. This will bring up a window with a sound mixer in it. Make sure that the ANALOG sound is not muted. There is a trap here, if IEC958 is shown as being enabled, that mutes analog output. Your card has analog output.
