no sound on toshiba satellite 5005-s504

Hello all,
I am running Knoppx 3.2 installed on my hard drive on a Toshiba Satellite 5005-s504. I am having trouble getting my sound to work.

The instructions on http://rooster.stanford.edu/~ben/toshiba/sound.php on how to get the sound working seem quite vague to me and I'm having trouble trying to follow his non-existant instructions. I downloaded the file acpi-20030916-2.4.22.diff from http://rooster.stanford.edu/~ben/toshiba/sound.php and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with this file. Can anybody help me? Thanks everyone for your help.

By the way, sound works on SuSE LiveEval 8.2, but not for some reason on Knoppix 3.2, 3.3, or Mandrake 9.1

The instructions on the website tell you to download the kernel, patch it and then use a kernel driver.

If you never did kernel compilation ever, go get some infos and howtos on eg www.tldp.org. There sould be also some remarks about patching.

Also, you can try using the alsa drivers, which you can download from www.alsa-projet.org. Download the packahes, compile install, do some setup (all very well documented) and it should run fine.

Sound works on suse because suse comes with ACPI fully compiled and enabled. It'll be much easier for you to use a Toshiba if you go buy, or FTP install a copy of SUse 8.2
