I'm pretty much a newbie here. Just installed FC4 on my Dell Inspiron 9100. When I login to dell's website, it says it's a Sigmatel audio, but linux detects it as Intel Corporation, yada yada something generic I suppose. Anyway, no sound is working, and I'm wondering if there's some simple solution I'm just not seeing. I went to Volume Control and none of the playback levels were muted.
Update: I just tested it with headphones and it worked fine.
A few minutes before, I had try to install Xandros just for the heck of it. During configuration after bootup, my speakers started making a high-pitched noise like on-stage feedback, and so I cut the system off after a couple times and said screw it. I wouldn't think it would have killed the speakers, but I don't know why they're not working otherwise.
Any ideas?
***Update***
Just booted a Knoppix CD. When it got booted up, I heard "Initiating Startup Sequence" over the speakers, so I know they still work. It's just a matter of convincing FC4 of this...
when your back to FC4 you have to use a mixer in order to configure your volume. try yum install aumix -> in console type aumix -> and raise or lower the pcm to ur liking. hope this helps.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5150, and I had sound issues as well. I had installed Fedora Core 3, and was not getting any sound. I did find a workaround/cure, but it was bothersome. If I went into the System->Sound (i think that's where i remember it being) or wherever the sound is configured (not mixer, but configuration), play the test sound. Sometimes it will play, sometimes it won't. But usually, once I exited the config utility, I had sound. I had to do this every time I logged in. I had other problems with Fedora on my Inspiron, so I decided to give SuSE a try. I'm currently running SUSE 9.1 and it runs like a dream. I had to do very little configuration to my system. I used YaST to pull down any hardware or software updates. I would highly recommend trying it if you have the chance.
I have a Inspiron 700m (thin and light) w. 'Sigma Tel' driver being used for the audio in Windows XP.
I use slackware 10.1 (kernal -2.4.29)
I also have the same sound problems with my audio.
From what i can gather it relates to Linux assigning the same Interupt request number to both the Sound Card and Modem.
Both are assigned IRQ:10
I did get it working (before i broke something else and have started again). From memory i used the ALSA (advanced linuux sound arch) as the driver.
And then 'DISABLED' the modem completely.
I assume that one can assign a different IRQ but i dont know how.
