"no screens error" - with X - help! i've looked everywhere

i'm running a g3 lombard with debian and i'm completely new to linux.

i'm trying to install X and it gives me the "no screens found" error which seems to be fairly common...

i've checked my XF86Config-4 file and i've no idea what to do...

i also looked at the log file (which i'd post here if i had any idea how to get the file off my laptop - no luck just from the command line) and it mentions:

"(WW) Open APM failed
(II) Module ABI versions:
XFree86 ANSI C Emulation: 0.1
XFree86 Video Driver: 0.4"

"(WW) ATI(0): Cannot shadow an acelerated frame buffer."

then it lists a bunch of different screen sizes and says the hsync is out of range, but i set it specifically from other people's config files (31.5-57.0)...and then for the screen sizes that are too big and i made sure to leave out of the config file it says errors like: "(bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan)" or "(insufficient memory for mode)"

any help would be much appreciated...

thanks,

dustin

Oh ya, Are you using woody Debian? It is kind of old, maybe you should try a different distro?
