No internet with Broadcom BMC43228 + Realtek semiconductor RTL8111
Hi,
I just bought a new netbook (lenevo x140e) and have been trying to get a linux distribution with working internet running for the past days without any luck. Right now I'm running ubuntu 14.04 without any working wireless or wired connection.
My wifi network controller is a Broadcom BCM43228 802.11a/b/g/n which seems to give a lot of trouble to other linux users. My ethernet controller is a Realtek semiconductor RTL8111/86168/8411. This controller seems to give also a lot of trouble with other linux users. Arg, I should have investigated a bit more before buying this netbook, I know...
Anyway, the troubles with my wifi controller should be fixable by installing the bcmwl-kernel-source package. So I tried to install this package from the installation usb (since I have no internet) but it needs the linux-headers package and this one is sadly not part of the installation usb (or I'm overlooking it).
I'm not the most experienced hardware driver expert in linux and feel a bit overwhelmed to solve this issue without any internet (and thus without any package manager). That's why I'm starting a thread here. Can anyone guide me in a direction to a solution? If you want I can give you more information, just ask me what would be handy to know.
If you're using the generic kernel, you should be able to install the headers from the Synaptic Package Manager. However, I would first verify your kernel version by first opening a terminal and entering the following command...
Code:
uname -r
In Synaptic, look under "linux-headers" or "linux-headers-generic" and the find the one that matches your kernel exactly.
Another method using the terminal that might be easier would be to follow the instructions here.
Also, concerning the the Broadcom (and possible the Realtek) drivers, have you tried using the "Additional drivers" utility within Ubuntu for installing these? See #30 with the green and white checkmark here.
Let us know how it goes.
Regards...

Hi guys,
thanks a lot for the replies! Been out of town this weekend but just before my trip I finally was able to fix it, so I'll just post what worked for me.
I don't know why it gave me a hard time, but apperantly linux-headers was already installed on my computer, and I was able to install the bmwcl driver off the ubuntu installation disk. In other words, just following the section 'STA - No Internet access' from this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...Driver/bcm43xx
