no fan control after hibernate resume on NC6000

Hello all,

I installed swsuspend2 on this machine:

HP Compaq NC6000
Debian Sarge
Kernel 2.6.8.1, from kernel.org compiled without initrd
Suspend2 2.1.7.2 for 2.6.8.1

When I resume from suspend, the fan is not being controlled as a function of temperature anymore. This is dangerous as the processor might overheat, and the fan is not switched on.

Is there someone who installed swsuspend2 on a HP Compaq NC4000, NC6000 or NC8000, and can confirm that fan control is still active after resuming. If so, what software versions do you use?

Thanks for replying

There is another thread similar to this in here, wasnt long ago. Try unloading your acpi modules before hibernating. Look in the config fil, its got quite a bit of info in there.

Yeah, I know, that was my post as well.

Since I did not receive any useful tips, I posted a different question. I just wanted to know if anyone out there had a succesful installation.

BTW, turning off ACPI before suspending doesn work, ACPI takes care of powering off the machine and that doesn't work anymore once ACPI is unloaded.

Thanks anyway... sigh

I know this is an old thread, but I ran into a simliar problem after resuming Slackware 10.2/2.6.15 on a Gateway Solo 1450LS.

I ended up making a script for turning the fan 'on' then 'off' again for after the resume...Not the way I wished it worked, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Code:
#!/bin/sh
#
# /usr/bin/fan A script written by cwwilson721 to allow
# the fan to turn off after resuming from
# 'hidernate. Had to make fan go 'on' then 'off'
# for this to work. All other ACPI functions
# seem not to be affected.
#

    # Turn on the fan
    echo -n "0" > /proc/acpi/fan/FAN0/state

    # And then, turn off the fan
    echo -n "3" > /proc/acpi/fan/FAN0/state
Just don't forget to make it executable, and save in /usr/bin

Have you seen this discussion? http://www.cyrus.com/debian/nc4000. Other debian install notes are available. APM may work better but if you need cpu throttling then you must use ACPI. Wish this whole APM/ACPI/BIOS thing was clearer. Good thing Sarge has lappy programs like susp2 and hibernate to help prolong battery life. Cheers.

cwwilson721,

Thanks for your suggestion. In the mean time I don't own the NC6000 anymore, and had it replaced with NC6230. I never got it so far as to install swsuspend, since I still have some other problems, and a limited amount of time. Details are here.

lestoil,

The link you posted seems to be dead. Besides, on this power-hungry monster I have now, I do need CPU throttling, and I even compiled a custom speedstep driver in my kernel to keep the CPU clock as low as possible.

Thanks to both of you for answering.
