no carrier on linmodem

i am a nooB running SUSE 9.2 professional. Kernel 2.6.8-24.11. My modem was diagnosed with scan modem as an hsf modem and i have downloaded the hsf driver from linmodems.org. The laptop sees the modem, and dials out. But i wait a bit, and get a no carrier message and then it redials. This telephone line is fine on my mac however, so i know there is a carrier!

Where do i go from here to figure out why it doesn't connect?

Thanx.

Hi,
try adding the following in your /etc/wvdial.conf file:

Carrier Check = no

Dunno if will work for ya but try adding 'Stupid Mode = Yes' Its not really the problem you seem to be having but have seen a thread where someone else got it to work by adding that. Are you connecting through a pabx or anything?

hmmmm

i run wvdial in the terminal and i get no carrier.

i run kppp from the panel and i get no carrier.

i do have a couple of weird related observations. When i dialup from my mac, the modem will not dial out at all unless it has a dial tone. I find it odd that this modem automatically is dialing out without a dial tone. i have been troubleshooting this for a few weeks now, and i have sometimes attempted to dial in without the actual telephone cord plugged in, but yet the modem will dial out. Isn't that odd?> It is as tho it is dialing blind. If i do this on my macs, they will give me back a "no dial tone" message and not attempt to dial. When I plug in the phone cord, nothing changes at all. I get the same log from kppp, i get the same dialing every 300 seconds or so...(it will reattempt the dial since it doesn't connect). I wonder if the system is really communicating with the modem at all....?

also. a question for my knowledge purposes only.
i got a different init string from linuxant.org techs. I was instructed to change the wvdial.conf file. I did this successfully. and i used wvdial in a terminal and watched the messages as i dialed. It used my new config that i saved but also got no carrier. When i used kppp to dial, I noticed from the log that the changes I made in wvdial were not applied to kppp. Obviously these 2 are separate dialing programs ?? They don't communicate with each other? If this is true, where do i change the modem init string in kppp? I don't see anything in the GUI, is there terminal commands i have to do to achieve this change in kppp/>

Thanx, without questions, how will i ever learn??????? (or get this freakin modem to work??!!!)
