no booting after installing ibm rescue & recovery

hi,

on my t41p, i have a winxp and an ubuntu partition. after installing ibm's rescue and recovery software, i cannot boot an os any more. the monitor is just frozen and displays grub. i've tried to fix the problem using a knoppix cd, but i do not get it. sfdiskshows that /def/hda2 is boot (inux Swap) (/dev/hda1 is NTFS, /dev/hda3 is linux), but I cannot do grub-install /def/hda2 ('Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device.').
Suggestions anyone? I have searched a lot on the web and have used all of my very limited linux knowledge, so now i am asking you.
thanks a lot,

christian

You are giving some conflicting info there;
- did you (at any point) have both XP and Ubuntu working ???
- why did install the "rescue and recovery" software - and where ???
- reboot the Knoppix and post the output (uneditted) from "fdisk -l" (ell, as in l{ist} ).
- Knoppix mounts all disks as R/O, that may be causing you problems on your attempts to fix things.

thanks for your reply! i got it to work now, the key was indeed that i needed writing permission in knoppix. so thanks again! before the installation of r&r, i had xp and ubuntu running perfectly.
cheers,
christian
