no acpi on presario 1700?

Hi,
I have a Compaq 1700 (17xl470) and try to get it running on suse. I tried 8.2 and 9.0 but with both I canīt get the acpi working. I tried with acpi=force apm=off pci=nonacpi but it doesnīt want to work. Iīm rather new with Linux, so I donīt know what to do anymore and donīt want to go back to XP...
Hereīs what I found out till today:
My Bios seems to be on a Blacklist, but others have managed to get it running. Iīd really need Battery-Status, a possibility to regulate the Prozessorspeed and it would be nice if the Machine could turn off by it self when shutting it down :)
Here some links that I found:

xtrinsic.com/geek/articles/acpi.html
zenux.net/linux/1720.html
poli.cs.vsb.cz/linux/somrak-presario-1700/
tuxmobil.org/apm_linux.html#ToC15
user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~gregorrg/compaq/presario17xl470.html

I already checked the manuals on tuxmobil but I only found one for 2.4.20 which I dont use in suse 9 and my linux-knowledge is far to bad to follow the instructions...
I really need this thing working, cause I have to write c for university on it as code from widows is not really running on the unix-machines in our institute. But without acpi I donīt see a chance to do so, cause the CPU-fan isnīt working at all (machine getīs really hot and it wonīt come up any time) and I sometimes have to operate on batteries which isnīt really easy without knowing the status of your bat-pack and you cpu running on full speed all the time...

I really hope someone can help me!!!!!!
As I already mentioned my linux knowlegde isnīt to great, but Iīm willing and a fast lerner if you give me a chance. but please no comments like "compile your kernel like always" cause I havenīt done it once! I dindīt even know there was something like a Kernel at all?!?!?!
Iīm open for all sugestions, if a new Distribution might help I can get every one around, but a new Laptop (due to lack of money) is out of the question...

Thanks for reading (and hopefully your helping answers),
Peter

It seems not so easy with Suse :

See: www.linux-laptop.net

There are several people who tried it also with Suse 8.2 and 9

I tried it with 8.2 and 9.0. Both with mainly the same result. With 8.2 at least my Machine turns off by it self, but thats all.
So Iīll have to stick with XP for some more time, and wait for the new 2.5 or 2.6 kernel...

Hello--I just saw this post from a search.

I have a Compaq 1700T that I just got ACPI working with Fedora Core 1.

You're right--our machine is on the ACPI Blacklist. That pretty much means no matter what we try, it ain't gonna work. So, I went into /usr/src/linux/devices/acpi/blacklist.c and commented out the two lines on the 1700 and recompiled the kernel. I also needed to add "acpi=force" on the kernel parameter line at boot.

I'm just digging into it, but the machine now powers off for me. The battery monitor wasn't immediately working, but I didn't notice the CPU overheating, but I wasn't really paying attention.

I wish there was more documentation on *why* this machine made the blacklist!

Best of luck! Email me if you want any more specific details.
