Newbie seeking help 2
ok here is the issue I have just installed and got most things up and running on my Inspiron 3800 laptop running Linux slackware 11. I have a 500GB external HD that connects by USB. Kinfocenter is detecting the HD under USB devices but I am unable to access it. Is there a way that I can make Linux see and access this HD without starting completely over?

Firstly, please use more descriptive thread titles in future (i.e. say something about the problem in the title).
You need to mount the partition(s) on the device to be able to access them. Mounting is attaching the filesystem(s) on the device to your "main" filesystem, the one that's rooted at /. If you run "dmesg" in a terminal (without quotes), you should see some output relating to your USB device. Post that output here so we can tell you what to mount. |

I will remember that in the near future about being more discriptive in the subject line. But at times it is difficult exspecially when you do not know what you are trying to do technically. I will work on that though.

Indeed, there is lots of irrelevant output from dmesg, but the relevant bits as far as your USB HD is concerned are Quote:

Assuming that was a typo and you meant NTFS, then change the "vfat" to "ntfs" when running mount. You won't be able to write to your NTFS partition, though.
You do have a normal user account right (i.e. one that isn't root)? I'm asking because you ran dmesg as root and I don't know if this was because you thought you needed to, or because you don't have a user account. If the latter, add a user account for yourself because you should be running as root all the time. If the former, well, you don't need to use root to run dmesg :). |

Need help mounting external HD
Ok it seams that I am still having issues with mounting my external HD. Ok first where do I have to input the information mount /dev/sbd1 /mnt/tmp -t ntfs is it in a termenal or do I have to log out and do it? Two, will this make it so that I can access this HD from system:/media or not? If not where would I need to place the script so that I will be able to access the HD from system:/media?:scratch:

Yes, you run mount in a terminal. If you want to access the disk at /media, well, change "/mnt/tmp" to "/media".

Ah, here's the problem I was going to mention earlier on in this thread but decided against it. Yesterday, it appears that you had a USB flash disk plugged in as well as your USB hard disk. The flash disk was /dev/sda and your USB hard disk /dev/sdb. When you plug these devices in, they aren't always going to be assigned to the same thing in /dev (so for instance, your USB hard disk may now be /dev/sda). Run dmesg again and see what it tells you this time. Post the output here if you're still unsure.
As an aside, a solution to the problem is to use a 2.6.x kernel and some software called udev, which generates (and removes) the "nodes" in /dev when you plug in (or disconnect) a device. It allows you to write rules for a particular device and you can even choose how the device is named in /dev (so for instance, you can have your hard disk called "usbdisk" and then you'd have /dev/usbdisk (and /dev/usbdisk1 which is the actual partiton you mount). This is good because a. it allows you to have meaningful names for devices and b. you don't have to worry about the device changing name as described above; your USB hard disk would always be /dev/usbdisk. But yeah, I'm just posting this in case it's something you want to look at later :). |
Ok, I finally got it to mount so that part is done. It is not exactly where I am wanting it but at least I have access to it now, will have to play around a bit to try and get it where I want, if I can even do that it is.

I have no idea what the < sda5 > is though. what it is I am trying to do is to be able to have at least a portion of my external HD to be able to read and write in both Linux and Windows, which is why I chose fat32. When I try to mount sda2 I get the following message root@darkstar:~# mount /dev/sda2 /E -t vfat mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2, missing codepage or other error (aren't you trying to mount an extended partition, instead of some logical partition inside?) In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so So, that is my issue thus far. |
