For the last couple of days i've been trying to install Suse 9.0 on my Armada e500 with 700mhz pentium processor, i've disabled ascpi.
Installed my network card (intel e100 driver) and went to the Ftp server (ftp.gwdg.de) so far everything went smooth. it connected to the server and started downloading the data into the Ramdisk... it finishes.....
And then nothing happens... it just shows me a finished status screen and
Nothing else happens, does anyone have a clue to what this might be??
I recommend that you download the 3 Mandrake 9.2 iso files from a mirror and burn them on cd.
I have a fully working mandrake 9.2 on my Armada E500.
Almost everything works exept my modem, but i don need it.
I've been using Slackware 9.1 with kernel 2.6.2 on my Compaq Armada E500 a long time now. Everything works, even the Lucent winmodem. (After downloading source code, compile and install).
Sound, ACPI (processor temp. battery condition etc) works very well.
The only thing I lack is faster drivers for the graphics card, Ati Rage Mobility P/M.
Graphics work but opengl is slow due to the drivers.
You're right about the ATI drivers snickie but this video chip is'nt going to be any faster.
The ATI Rage Mobility P/M has only 8Meg RAM and is AGP 2x.
I tried to find a linux driver for this card on the internet without success.
This also applies to windows, the only drivers available are from compaq itself.
So we are bound to the drivers supplied in the distributions.

Greetings,

You are saying this chip isn't going any faster. Yes it is! I've been using Microsoft Windows 98SE and later Windows 2000 and with these os'es the graphics is much faster. Hell, I've played MS Flight Simulator and had framerates at about 20-25 fps.
So your comment about old chip and AGP 2x is totally irrelevant. The hardware is the same with Windows, isn't it?
In my opinion, this is the major drawback with GNU/Linux. Lack of desent drivers!

actually there's another crowd out there somewhere which claims to be many times faster than the stuff coming out of xfree... for the life of me i can't remember who they are however i do remember that you had to purchase their stuff
