Hello
I a extremely new to using Linux. This is the first time I have tried installing the operating system and know very little about it. Trying to learn as I go. I have a sony V505ACP with the built in wireless adapter. I have been searching all over the the linux community web sites and found information on using a patched orinoco driver. The problem is I have no idea of how to install this or what to do with the driver. Could anyone point me to a step by step instruction to0 get this wireless card to work?
I have found all the info at linux-laptop.net but it doesn't provide a newbie like me with enough info.
Hey.. i'm new too (high five) and I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro m15-s405... it came with WinXP HE and well.. i kind of got tired of the same old Windoze so I decited to try Linux..
Here in my college (UMich) the school uses Red Hat 9 on their machines so i installed it on my machine... the install was alright.. the laptop's mouse won't work correctly but i have a USB one so that's alright... but what really is a pain in the neck is that it doesn't support my Wi-Fi card either... does anybody have info on this?
oh, and also: i tried using a USB floppy drive.. it worked to use the diskette to read and write files but when i tried to format the diskette.. i got this error message: Unable to open the device /dev/fd0, formatting cannot continue.

What's the wireless adapter? A lot of these built-in cards are produced by companies that are almost actively anti-linux, so its impossible to get specs to build a driver. What's the output of the command:
I also have recently gotten a Toshiba, the M10-S405, that I believe has the same hardware, here's a copy of my lspci. It presently has RH9 on it. I think it's the unknown Intel device. Looking on the Intel website Linux support looks gloom. The indication of upcoming Linux drivers is more than seven months old.

Yeah, its a Centrino, the Intel 2100 wireless chipset. No hope for a while until Intel either releases a Linux drivers or specs on which to build one. There's a closed source wrapper utility produced by a company called www.linuxant.com that will let you use, no kidding, the windows XP driver with their kernel driver to get functionality out of the card. I really don't even like the idea of it, but by reports it works...
