And exactly which one (type nr) do you have on you're wishlist of each brand? Without that information it's quite hard to say "that brand is better".

Usually better support of linux by IBM, google for thinkwiki.org
But you have to balance price and all the other criteria you may have

And why not a Tosh?

IBM Thinkpads are rock solid (high quality casing), and all the parts used inside are "standard" which makes it very easy to install Linux.

I'm using Slackware on my Thinkpad with all the "bells and whisles" like standby, hibernating, CPU throttling ... (thinkwiki.org is really good), the only drawback is that you have to pay for the pre-installed windows. (grrr)

Many people may have had good expirience with acer however that being said. I have had lousy expirience with them. Poorly made, poorly supported, over priced paper weights. (Just my opinion) One job I worked at bought some acer as a test looking aby to switch to them before long they ditched what they bought and bought elsewhere.

IBM on the other hand makes pretty decent laptops.
Dell not so bad more middle of the road for how well built they are.

IBM is a little sturdier, better built.

i voted thinkpad. everything seems to work (haven't bothered with firewire) and setting up wireless was a breeze.

My IBM T40 (note: not Lenovo) is as good of a laptop as I could ask for, and IBM supports Linux very well. Don't know about Lenovo, but I'm probably not willing to shell out the cash to find out. I figure I'll be using my T40 for at least another 2 or 3 years
