I just installed Redhat Linux 9 on my dell inspiron 5100 laptop, and everything worked out effortlessly with the exception of one thing: my network card.... my laptop comes with a broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated nic........
I've been trying to get linux to detect my network card for a few hours now, with no luck.
Anyone care to shed some light on a n00b? thanks in advance.
I found the driver for my NIC: bcm4400-2.0.5-1.src.rpm
I followed the instructions on the README file included with it (I was supposed to extract the original RPM, then build another RPM with some of the files I originally extracted (don't ask me why, I'm a newbie)
I did that, and everything seemed to go normally, but as it was building the rpm, it exited suddenly with the error:
Makefile: 18: *** Linux kernel source tree not found. Stop.
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.28542 (%build)
I have no idea what any of this means, and really, any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance
I'm in pretty much the same boat as you. New Dell notebook everything works but the NIC card. Did you get the driver from the broadcom website? Thats where I got mine I think its the same one your using. When I type rpmbuild using the rpm file or make using the tar file I get that "Linux kernel source tree not found" Have you had any luck?
Actually I finally made it work but I forgot how I did it... I think the problem was that I was not logged in as root when I typed the rpmbuild command. (Even if you su, it doesn't work, so you HAVE to be logged in as root).... After I did the rpmbuild and I installed the newly packaged rpm, I was supposed to activate the driver by running the insmod command...
when I did that, it said
¨command insmod not found¨
But that was also because I was not logged in as root...
Hope it's as simple as that for you...
Hi,
I was logged in as root from the start.
But i also get the message
"Makefile:18: Linux kernel source tree not found"
whenever i try to make the BroadCom 4400 driver.
It's strange that i can't find anythin about this message in general on the net.
Anyone a clue?
