Netbook - Acer Aspire One - basic help needed.
I have an Acer Aspire One netbook - no cd drive as that would double the size of this little machine. The Acer web page doesn't offer any help despite selling these Linux machines.
I used to be on a computer help desk so have no problems with Microsoft but my only experience of Unix was about 8 years ago when I used Pine as an email programme. Therefore my Linux experience is Nil. The machine came preloaded with Linpus, Firefox and Open Office. It has no real picture editing software although I will try to connect the machine to my Broadband connection and download some although I do not know which is likely to be the best. I am having trouble finding my way around Linpus, talk of typing "whatever" into the "whatever" is a foreign concept to a MS user although I used to use DOS. (see the messages telling someone to "Type Start X" which means nothing to me - I wouldn't know where to type it etc.) Is there a *VERY* simple Linpus guide anywhere? One which does NOT pre-suppose knowledge ..... Any idiot level information would be gratefully received. I only bought the Acer because this pc has a problem with its USB ports and I needed a machine urgently. It's tempting to convert it to Windows XP but I like the idea of a Microsoft-free zone. Linpus is based on fedora so the fedora docs will work just fine.

photo editing software
If you need a good photo editing software download gimp.
gimp is a *nix program comparable to photoshop. You will want to experiment with it - I am not even what could be described as proficient with gimp, but i have used it a bit. |
the first link in craigevils post is broken.. here it is again..
http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/v....php?f=5&t=458 Looked at the Linpus website. it was severely broken and I couldn't get to any documentation :( personally I reloaded mine with Debian, Linpus didn't inspire me. If you are more familiar with another distro you could always reload the netbook.. Of course that probably doesn't help someone so new to Linux.. :/ Slackware 12.1 http://www.thev.net/cgi-bin/awki.cgi...amp=1222950371 Debian - Testing http://wiki.debian.org/DebianAcerOne Arch Linux http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acer_Aspire_One Ubuntu https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne |
Many thanks for the help.
I stopped myself - just in time - from installing Ubunto (which is the one I had heard of) on this machine. I'm using my pc at the moment - a senior moment indeed! |
