Hello,
I am wanting to purchase a pre-loaded Ubuntu laptop, so I'm looking into system 76 computers, which seem to have good specs and come highly recommended. I'm trying to decide between the gazelle (with matte screen) and the kudu. Since they are about the same price, I am looking foe recommendations based on the following.
1. I will be using the computer for sound analysis software, google earth, and r stats - along with regular web browsing, word processing, etc.
2. I do a lot of my work at a field site with electricity only when I power up a generator. I know that Ubuntu traditionally means poor battery life, and I'm willing to sacrifice that a bit to have a pre-loaded Ubuntu computer. However, is there any difference in battery life between the two computers?
3. Also, given that I work at a field site, I know that the kudu is larger and heavier. However, it apparently has the nicer keyboard, display, etc. Is it MUCH bulkier than the gazelle? (enough to exceed the benefits of the keyboard and display of the kudu?)
Thank you so much. I've been using a mac since the mid-90s and am excited for a change!
1. if you're doing sound analysis, go for the best CPU you can afford. I have used a Gazelle Pro with an 8 core i7 and it processes sound like a champion.
2. Linux, Ubuntu or otherwise, on sys76 does not mean short battery life. The Gazelle that I used lasted for four to six hours (straight) for me, depending on what I was doing. Obviously processing audio drained it faster than typing and letting it hibernate and then coming back and typing some more, and so on.
3. Can't answer this one because I've never used the Kudu. I did see it at a conference but only briefly so I can't really speak on it.
I was a former Mac user as well. Welcome to Linux! much much happier place.
