Need suggestions for me Dell 600m

I got a dell 600m over 2 weeks ago, and Ive just been having a ridiculous amount of problems with it. Right when I got it, I installed slackware 9.1. It worked ok, but I had no sound. I then upgraded to kernel 2.6.7, and the sound worked, but then my network card didnt. Then I began to try other distros... mandrake 10, gentoo 2004.1, suse 9.1, fedora core 2, and eventually slackware 10. Currently, I have reinstalled slackware 10 about 15-20 times trying to get it to work. Upon a clean installation, various commands that should be working simply do not work. My lsmod command doesnt work, neither does my modprobe command. If I try to upgrade my kernel to 2.6.7, even more problems arise. Im getting pretty frustrated with this whole thing, and I am getting close to just reinstalling Windows XP on it.

My question to all of you is - to anyone here who happens to have a Dell 600m with linux on it - what are you running on it, and how did you get it working? Im willing to, at this point, use any distro of linux at all, as long as it will work. All I want is a laptop with sound, a working ethernet card, and a working wireless card. Beyond that I think I can handle it, but so far everything I have tried has resulted in only one of the previous working at any given time.

Well... I have a Dell Latitude D600 (Hey.. It's kind of similar) and I'm running Slackware 10 on it. I experienced the same lsmod / modprobe problem. It turned out that the /lib/modules was not there :S

Updating the kernel fixed the problem and now I'm having it run nicely. I've had many of the problems you've been having (Network, Sound, lsmod/modprobe). Heck, not even my USB Mouse worked :P

Why don't you install some distro and then just tell us one by one what happens. I think it will be easy to solve these problems. Just don't give up

Yeah I have Slack 9.1 on my 600m over here but unfortunately can't report much success. I followed the pages posted by XavierP there to get the small bit that I have working working. I now have sound after unmuting some things with alsa and I've installed the ndiswrapper (version 0.7, just found out there's a new version) but couldn't get it to work here; perhaps due to the driver I used (Dell website) or the fact that I'm trying to use the school's network which requires a VPN client and the routers may/may not have ID broadcasting on, which I just read may be an issue. I can't tell you anything about the ethernet connection as I have no way to use it unfortunately.......

It seems to be a pretty good little machine and I'd really like to have something other than the evil empire occupying space on the HD. I should try Slack 10 but haven't the gumption to deal with it now. Good luck with that, and if you are successful you should post the results.
