Need new Linux Laptop Recommendations for suppliers please
I need to obtain a laptop computer with a Linux operating system and I lack the time and expertise to put one together and get it debugged and running smoothly myself in time to meet my needs, (however instructional, desirable and fun  that might be). I would classify myself as something more advanced than a rank newbie but humility requires me to claim newbie status relative to the majority of those who post here.
I would like recommendations on who can sell me one set up and ready to go with the OS and all the PROPER drivers installed AND backed up on CD's or DVD. All components installed and fully functioning. I need something reliable, maintainable (not off brand and out of production when repairs are needed using odd components with arcane drivers) and something that won't shatter my budget. Your recommendations please -- Including sources and brands to avoid as well as good sources. |

Is 30 minutes too long a process to do it your self?
Both of my notebooks require less than 30 minutes of my time to do clean install and full update to make all hardware work. Each requires automatic update to get all hardware working but no driver hunting or configuring on my part. Have you checked the hardware compatibility lists here & other places? You could buy a notebook with Windiz tax paid & installed plus a hard drive. Download Ubuntu or Kubuntu, burn it to a CD or DVD. Boot the CD, if it does boot, you do not need to change computer settings. Install the new HDD. Boot the CD again and choose install. After update, check that it all works. If so OK. If not, 2 choices. 1, replace original HDD, return computer to store. 2, check here for ways to make it all work. Kubuntu 8.04 actively prods me to let it install software for my hardware! Kubuntu 7 needed me knowing ways to make stuff work, including sound & network. Kubuntu 8 does it all, with me just approving what it wants to install. I, same a Linus, prefer all Intel chips in computer due to Intel support of Linux. Have you checked for a local Linux users group? Linux users at local college? Linux oriented tech at local computer retailer? Got it done yet? I could do it in Houston TX area. |
Hi,
You could look at 'Linux User Groups' a world list. This link and others are available from 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links! |
Lenovo (http://www.lenovo.com) offers a T61 in either a 14.1 or 15.4 inch LCD well under $1000(USD).

------------- I live on a part of the Ozark plateau in Missouri which is served by a very lame small telephone company with no nearby cell towers. So with no landline or wireless telecommunications worthy of the name the best I can hope for is 16.2 to 19.8 kbs (yes that is kbs ) dial up service (if you can call that service). Multimedia and multimegabyte updates are a joke and only possible for 10 to 15 megabytes if the phone line holds up for several hours without a hick-up. I am also sufficiently far from town that I limit my trips to control expenses. (did I mention the positives, no building codes, no officials if you keep your taxes paid and lots of wildlife {I mean the animals not Friday night parties}). Unless someone has a solution I have not yet heard of, I really need to set up Linux from a durable hard copy (CD or DVD) so that repairs and reinstallations are entirely in my control without need of internet.
