Sounds like you didn't configure X correctly... On installation, did you set the X settings and than 'test' them? Every time I reinstall my laptop I just assume I know the right settings and skip the test, and than startx doesn't work.
I don't know how you fix this problem manually... It sucks, but I just reinstall the OS and make sure I 'test' the X configurations next time.
I dont' know about the NIC. No drivers? I know I've had mandrake fail on eth0 and than still have a network connection when it was done booting. But personally I'd worry about X first. Once your in a gui it might be easier to lock down your eth0 problem.

hmmmm, it sounds like your video chip might not be supported... Have you looked it up in Mandrake's HCL?
I've never gotten that error, so I"m just shooting in the dark here for ideas... What I would do is when I'm trying to select a configuration, set the resolution and color to it's lowest setting, than start trying video drivers. Try to look up on the net or in your documentation what video chip you have, and see if you can find the make and model in the list. If you can't find it, start trying all the drivers for that brand (assuming there isn't too many). If that still doesn't work, you can try the generic or "standard" drivers as a last ditch effort, but they usually don't work to an acceptable degree. (if you do find a driver that loads, than start increasing the resolution/color one step at a time)
If that doesn't work, you may have to try and download a driver for the chip and install it from the command line (which I can't help with). Before trying this though, you could try another distro to see if that works. Try something like Knoppix (linux on CD), and see if that loads a gui. If so, check it's configuration and see what driver it uses.
Sorry I can't give you a definate solution to your problem. I hope some of this helps...
