I'm currently using a Toshiba Satellite 5200, and i just installed RedHat 9 onto dualbooting with XP. The install went perfectly and I could get into Linux with 800x600 resolution. Once in the os, i changed the resolution to 1600x1200 and then changed my video card to a GeForce FX and now when i boot it up, the screen goes blank right before the login. I suspect that it has something to do with what i did to the video settings. I have no clue how to change the resolution back, the only thing i can think of is reinstalling it again and not making the same mistake. Is there anyway I can fix it without reinstalling?
ps: is there any way i can get my GeForce to work and for linux to display 1600x1200 resolution?
no, linux automatically selected the VESA driver and it worked...
then i changed the settings to Nvidia and also to 1600x1200 and it stopped working, i dont know how to change it back.
The vesa driver is a "generic" driver that just works with most hardware, to get the proper resolution you need to use the specific driver for your hardware, and in the case of Nvidia and/or ATi that means you need to install their linux drivers just like you have to install them in that other OS before you can set the correct resolution. All is not lost however, you can edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config in a text editor to change those values back to 'vesa' and '800x600, then you need to install the nvidia linux driver before you set them back to 'nvidia' and 1600x1200.
All the instructions are in the nvidia ReadME, and the driver is here.
