ndiswrapper: Sees wlan card, gets signal, doesn't go online
 

It's a fairly simple dilemma, but the implications are disasterous! My wireless was working with ndiswrapper under SUSE. I've switched to Ubuntu, and now I'm having trouble getting up and running. I don't think the problem is ndiswrapper. My card shows up in network-admin, I can scan for ESSIDs in my neighborhood and it's right on the nose. iwconfig and ifconfig display the card, I can change the channel, the WEP key.

Basically, everything works as it should. HOWEVER, I can't access the Internet. No application that requires an online connection will be able to function properly. Can I get some help with this?

What kind of card do you have? Maybe Ubuntu supports it wouthout ndiswrapper.

Did you install the windows driver from the CD?

Okay, I installed the latest build of Dapper Drake. It automatically recognizes my Broadcom WLAN chipset. I don't think recognizing the card was ever the problem now.

Alas, DHCP won't work. And entering in the IP address I get through Windows' ipconfig won't work either, the card won't even activate in that case. I go through a combination Modem/Router to get to my DSL connection. Are there any problems I should be watching out for when configuring Ubuntu with a router? Some kind of port forwarding perhaps?

Thank you beagle2, but the problem is not with set-up. I set up everything by the book, disable my wired connection, and then I can't access the web anymore. During the install process, I set up my wireless connection and Ubuntu installer couldn't access DHCP then either.

If I read you right you have a wired connection when you install, then configure wireless? If your wireless card is ok then no need for wired connection at all - perhaps dhcp still trying to use wired connection for ip address and giving up. Deactivating wired connection first before you install might help. I did same as you 3 days ago with elive, installed with wired then tried to configure wireless - dhcp kept timing out so reinstalled with wired connection unplugged and configured wireless no problem. Must be correct way of doing that but it worked for me. Hope you get what Im trying to say here, not very clear, sorry.

Dapper is unstable and uses the highly experimental bcm43xx driver. It requires extracted firmware in order to work. I suggest you stick with the stable distribution (Breezy) if you want help.
