Question My wireless networking is disabled after Upgrade from Xubuntu 11.10 to Xubuntu 12.04

Hello!

First of all I am somekind "new" to linux (i mean i used it before but not much)

When I installed Linux Xubuntu Oneiric Ocelot I was prompted to update and upgrade my system and so is what i did.

First I updated the settings, restarted laptop then went for upgrade to 12.04 and when i restarted the things went bad.

"Networking disabled, you are now offline"

The networking was disabled and there was no network connections available (i right clicked on wireless icon and it says its enabled but there still was no connections available).

Did I do something wrong ?

Two things,...

We are going to need details on hardware to help you.

And,...

I can tell you from experience that you almost never want to use the upgrade feature in Ubuntu. It's better with a re-install. And a reinstall is less painless with a separate /home partition. You can chose the advanced partitioning and elect not to format your home partition... And that way you only need to migrate your data to your new user account (you don't want to use the same user name in Ubuntu when you upgrade).

That said, the upgrade versus a new install is not likely the reason you're experiencing wireless trouble. Ubuntu 12.04 was a BAAAAAD release. Sloppy, slap shot, many regressions, many things broken. The 12.04 release was one of the worst releases in Ubuntu's history. I advise people with a working 10.04 to stay put for now.

i think this seemed to solve my problem

Remove and uninstall the drivers:

Quote:
sudo apt-get purge broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta-source bcmwl-kernel-source
Install the correct one:

Quote:
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer

Thanks anyway!!

And what do you say about 12.10 edition?? it is the latest release but on their official website they say the 12.04 is the stable one and this wireless problem tells me that the 12.04 is not ...

Can you recommend me another linux distro (more stable)?

You can try 12.10,... Use the 12.10 Live CD to test it first.

As to stability,... Ubuntu has 2 releases per year,... 04 in April, 10 in October,... Every two years (or so), a release becomes an LTS release, meaning that the support is good for 3 years (more for the server edition). Unfortunately, because they insist on keeping their release cycle (no delays), you will sometimes have releases that are sub-part and need substantial patches/updates to correct problems. Adding to the trouble, Canonical sometimes makes policy changes in terms of what and how they will support something that adds to the trouble (such as dropping support for certain devices, etc.). Let's not even bring up the political issue of the "Unity" interface.

With the 12.04 release, they have problems with;
* Wireless device support
* Nonstandard monitor resolutions
* Touchscreen device support
* ACPI support
Among others... Maybe by the time 10.04 is End-of-Life'd, They'll have 12.04 working alright.

And what happens when the release reaches the End Of Life date?? they'll stop sending the updates or what?

What about other, non-ubuntu linux releases? Is there something better then Ubuntu?

I am really really sorry for this spamming i'll try not to do this in future!

They stop delivering updates,... yes. Then it's time to either upgrade versions or live with an outdated system.

Better?! That's really opinion. You'll see a lot of replies saying different things. Download some distros, and try out their Live CDs. There are Ubuntu offshoots, like Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, etc. Mint's really popular (based on Ubuntu/Debian). Fedora, CentOS & SuSE are popular (all RPM package manager distros). There are Slackware fans (Slack being, what I believe, is the oldest distro still in active development). Then, there's Debian, Gentoo, Fuduntu, etc., etc. ... All worth a look...

There's a Linux distro out there for everyone ...

now i am familiar with EOL'd distros.. ummm... at least with ubuntu 9.04

I know that everyone says the different things (ubuntu 10.04 is better, debian is best, choose fedora blah bla bla ) and that is because there is a lot of linux distros today (good, bad, medium, difficult to understand and so) how to choose if there is so much of them ??

BUT!! in other hand LINUX IS FUN!!!
now i'm using ubuntu lucid

not just less painless but it takes less time ... upgrades may last 2 or even 3 hours (depends on connection) and it is almost the same process as installing from LIVE CD/DVD

I have dual booted Ubuntu with win 7 but since i've got to linux i dont use win much ...maybe i should free some space on disk )
