Try doing a reinstall of that operating system. If you used a bootable USB stick try that again. If you used an external DVD drive, likewise use that one again.

Run Linux in live mode off of the install media. See if you can find if there is any data on your hard drive or obviously missing directories.

I would also suggest trying a few different distributions of Linux before settling on one. If you have found just one that is your favorite and it doesn't work, try downloading it again or burn another disk.

It's an Asus...did you try to CHECK THE ASUS WEBSITE?

What is the OS you are referring to? If it is Windows, try to get a copy from your vendor/manufacturer. If it is Linux, chose one from this site, then download and install it.

Have you tried the good old fashioned F9 restore?

That Chakra distro running a KDE beta is real bleeding edge. It might not be stable enough for a netbook yet. I'd try a more established and tested distro. Here is a good one.

http://www.mepis.org/ Whether you get 8.0 or 8.5, you can't make a bad choice with Mepis. Obviously with a netbook + Atom processor, you will need the 32 bit version, not the 64 bit.

This is how to make a live USB to install it on a netbook. Of course, if you have access to an external DVD player, you can use the DVD or CD and not worry about making a live USB installer.

Bleeding edge -- Try Mepis instead.

Something like puppy, slitaz, wolvix, zenwalk or slax is likelly light enough to run fast on such underpowered computer.

You can run any distro on this computer, if you don't go for a full blown desktop with effects enabled. I wouldn't consider this machine underpowered, it is suited to its purpose, this is not meant to be a gaming or development machine.

The link I gave was not a link to Chakra, but to Distrowatch. But I wonder how you come to the conclusion that an OS can not be stable enough for a netbook. That implies that it would be more stable for a desktop, but I wonder why?

Mine crashed by just disconnecting the power supply. The original operating system that was preinstalled was Xandros but now there are many distributions tailored to it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari..._distributions

You probably can run any distribution but it makes sense to use one that is optimized for the hardware. I would suggest Ubuntu netbook edition as a replacement.
