Talking My ACPI works!!!

Well, I finally got it working in my new kernel, using the patch, and the options in the kernel. My laptop runs pretty cool, and my battery life was about 3 hours and 45 minutes in class, which it was only about 2 and 1/2 hours with Windoze. Now, how can I monitor my battery status and my CPU temp and fans and stuff like that? I compiled in the I2C software as well, and I already have Gkrellm. SUggestions?

Maybe look into lm_sensors. That monitors the CPU temp and things. I've never used it, but have a google for it and ou might find something useful

Any chance of giving a Linux newbie some tips on how to get that acpi working? I have a Athlon +2400 and am running RedHat 9.

Thanks ever so much.

Being on Redhat, I think you have to upgrade to a newer kernel, then compile with the ACPI options enabled. It really isnt that hard to compile, whats hard is getting everything working right

How do I tell if my ACPI is working. I have Redhat 9.0 on a Fujitsu-Siemens P4 laptop.

What are the best downloads for monitoring CPU temp, I just want something lite, gkrellen looks too comprehensive.

ls /proc/acpi

if you see a listing of directories, there's a serious chance of acpi working

What you could also do is download gkrellm and gkacpi (both sf.net) and see if you can use the plugin. If it doesn't show information about battery and temp, acpi is not running.

booting with
apm=off acpi=on
should start acpi, if it's in the kernel. If it's not, you need to recompile (I think there are stickies in about every distro-forum on LQ, so you can have a look over there.
