msi wind
To whom it may concern,
I am thinking about buying an msi wind and I am trying to figure out which one is the best for my situation. I am leaning towards the U100, but I think that the best msi wind suited for my needs is the U120 because it has enough power to dual boot ubuntu and windows xp. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Which one has the best price and the best specifications for what I want to do? |
Well. I guess the question is, what exactly are you trying to do? We're not mind readers you know! ;)
|
There are eleven (11) Different models of the msi wind 100
There are three (3) Different models of the Msi Wind 120 http://www.msimobile.com/level2_prod...?id=3&page=all Was there a couple specific models you were interested in ? Could you post your requirements and the specs of the two models you are looking at ? My recommendation would be to buy the pink one.. it will demonstrate that you are secure in your manhood, and will reduce the odds of it being stolen. (there was a recent ask slashdot thread about netbooks.. a rather interesting and sometimes humerous read.) |
msi wind
I need it for writing, internet, music, movies, games like solitaire and the first mario, and shortcuts like gnome do. The models I am interested in are:
U100-411US Product Number: 9S7-N01154-420 Starting at $429.99 U100-420US Product Number: 9S7-N01152-451 Starting at $429.99 U100-451US U100-641US I would like it to be powerful enough to dual boot windows xp and ubuntu 8.10 Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. I do not need bluetooth, wireless n, and I do not need a large screen. |
Ok, I took a quick look at the pink one!) and from what I can see looking at the spec on these machines, they are probably over specced for your requirements, but then, anything below those is probably not gonna run windows. Dare I say it, if it can run windows xp home, it can run ubuntu 8.10, and if it can run either, it can run both, seeing as it comes with a 160GB HDD.
The only thing I am worried about for you will be hardware compatibility with ubuntu and one of these machines. I know ubuntu very well, but I know they had some difficulty with power management on the Intel Atom processor. Anyway, take a look at this link:http://wiki.msiwind.net/index.php/Ub...04_Hardy_Heron which is a wiki for people doing what you're doing. This particular wiki seems to give the impression that ubuntu is on top of things except maybe for the wireless, which you have said you don't want. Thats my two cents anyway! |
Oh yeah, I have tried the ubuntu netbook remix thing, my advice is to stay away! It's really not great at all at the moment.
|
I do not want wireless n, but I do want wireless internet. Besides the problem with the atom processor, which of the choices that I listed is the cheapest one and has also been tested for what I want straight out of the box. Or does all of the choices that I listed work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer that the laptop have the 120gb instead of the 160gb.
|
I have narrowed my choices down to two laptops. The msi wind U100-451US white with 160gb and the msi wind U100-420US Black 120gb. The white one is cheaper and has more hdd space. Why is the black one more expensive with less hdd space?
|
In my place, there are some stores that allow buyers to try laptops by using Linux LiveCD and experiment with. This can save money and time sometimes. For me, I try my laptop with Knoppix CD. You can try with any LiveCD or USB you want instead.

The only spec difference I see is RAM speed and Hard drive size.. Black is sometimes carries a premium charge because of the color.. (no clue why) Quote:
I see them both listed as $429.99 on the MSI website.. and $350.00 from tiger Direct.. for the 420 $309 for the 451 on sale |
To whom it may concern,
Does anyone know how to replace the hard drive on an msi wind U100-451US? Is there a video somewhere, maybe on youtube? If there is can you post the link. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. |
Also, does anyone know if ubuntu 8.10 will work on the msi wind? The link for the wubi installer only mentions ubuntu 8.04.1. What I would like to do is create a live usb key with ubuntu 8.10 and try it out. After I boot with the live usb key will I be able to run grub? What I would like to do ideally is explained in this video http://digg.com/d1oW07
The only difference would be that she uses a live cd. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. If this can be done I would not have to use the wubi installer. |
Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.
|
if 8.04 will work then 8.10 should work fine as well.

When I install ubuntu 8.10 and go into the custom disk portion of the install what is the ideal way for me to partition the drive without removing windows xp? On this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MsiWind it says that I should just remove partition D: change it into a swap and root partition. The swap and root partition would be identified as / /root right? Or would it be the other way around? I am sorry I am a noob at this. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated and I do not want to lose the windows xp partition.
