mounting 2nd hard drive on ibm T41 with redhat 9.0
 

has anyone out there successfully mounted a 2nd hard drive (in optical bay) on a T41 ibm using redhat 9.0 (or any other manifestation of linux)? i have been at war with my computer for some time over this matter.

please help, i think my computer is winning the battle.

sorry all - i have been in a daze here ...


here is what happens - i have the 2nd hd in the optical bay. when linux starts up i try to mount with either

[root@dhcp-232-210 root]# mount /dev/hdb1 /dosd

and get:
mount: /dev/hdb1 is not a valid block device

or

[root@dhcp-232-210 root]# mount -t vfat /dev/hdc1 /dosd

and get:
mount: /dev/hdc1: can't read superblock

hda is assigned to my main hard drive


i have searched and searched for others having the same problem and now am wondering if i am going about mounting the hard drive in the wrong way (should i not be using /dev ??)

this is just a second hard drive for backing up data. i have a dual boot on hda1 - this is used nowhere in the boot process, just extra space

My suggestion would be to take the second HDD out of the UltraBay and put it directly into the machine (remove the original HDD first of course). Format it and install RH9.0 and then place it back within the UltraBay. UltraBay HDDs are kinda weird if they aren't formatted before going into the bay. Funny thing is I am an IBM ThinkPad TSR and I see a lot of this sort of issue.

remove hd#1, put in its place hd#2 - format hd#2

now are you suggesting that i install rh9.0 on hd#2? i am just using it as a spare drive and have rh9/xp dual boot on hd#1

No problem Travis I know how it is. To be more specific take the HDD that was shipped with the machine out. Put the new HDD into the machine, boot up and format the HDD. Remove the drive, put it into the UltraBay adapter and replace the original HDD back into the machine. There is a known (but undocumented) issue with the UltraBay HDD not being detected unless it is formatted before installation. Once you get it formatted and placed back into the bay it should be fine.

I misunderstood you the first time I read through the post and thought you were looking to mirror the info on your main HDD so that is why I told you to install RH9 there. Sorry, reading comprehension needs a little work :D.

ken - that is ok ... i have been in school for like, 50 years now (ok, exagerating a bit) and still can't read

please allow me to ask a stupid question .... i am about to install fc2 and phase out my rh9 use. say i leave my 2nd hd in the optical drive, format it while in the optical drive (is it still ok to have it formatted as fat32?) and after it is formatted install fc2 on my 1st hd (still connected as is) so to avoid taking apart my computer. i dont mind dissasembly, just time consuming.

You shouldn't have any problems if you do that, but the major issue is getting it formatted first. The way the machine is set up it will not detect the UltraBay HDD unless it is formatted so it will need to be formatted the way I laid out in my previous post.

PS. If you need any help on removing the HDD let me know. It is super easy and it wont take but 2 minutes.

formatted hd2 before i updated to fc2 and hd2 was picked up a-ok!

now all i have to do is deal with fc2 not recognizing my usb (leading to mouse not working) and soundcard, et. al.

I am glad that the second HDD is working now. The other problems I am not sure on, but I am sure the good people here will be able to answer those questions pretty easily.
