More than one month watching a black screen
Hello
Nice being with you all as from now. I am used to be a Windows slave. More than one month ago I got an Acer netbook aod 250 - hd 160Gb ram 2Gb I came with Linpus Linux - or should come. Since then I am looking at a black screen in which I can read: "Gnu Grub Version 0.94 - 630Kb low - 2.085.336 Kb high" I got a 2 Gb pendrive. Since I thought my linux installation was not ok, I tried to reinstall Linpus-linux, (also I tried this same thing using the Restore CD), After I tried to install ubuntu and Linux-Mint-Gloria. No way. The best I could do is to use slax IN THE PENDRIVE. I would like to have someone to guide me installing any of the above Linux systems AS FROM THE PENDRIVE (as I have not any optic drive in my netbook) --------------------------- BUT REMEMBER: - I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT LINUX. --------------------------- Thanks in advance. r_active r_active@ig.com.br |

Only to remember, my netbook is fully new. Would you try one other attempt? Thanks in advance. r_active r_active@ig.com.br |
If you are willing to spend a few dollars buy an external DVD drive [they plug in to a usb port]
Install whatever you want for a CD or DVD. It is the easiest method. |
I appreciate your effort to help

Thank you very much for the advice. However I am not in position to take advantege of your offer by now. Thus, I,m gonna trying to get the help I need to amke my netbbok to work by the most economic means. I appreciate your effort to help. Have a nice Christmas season r_active |
Maybe you could use Slax from the pendrive to install CD or DVD iso files to the HDD, loop mount it or them, copy files from there to the HDD and thus make the HDD functionally equivalent to bootable install CD or DVD.
Knowing nothing about Linux you probably don't want to install Slackware but you may like to look here and here to get an idea how the technique above can be done. There may be pages on the net describing how to do it for the distro of your choice. |

Thank you for your sugestion. I tried and succeeded installing Ubuntu netbook mix 9.10 OS, and have now my netbook working partially. I have run a system test and the main problem I found was "no proprietary dribers are installed". I have downloaded main drivers from manufacturer´s site. I would like to begin installing the internet controller driver (lan_atheros_(AR8132), but now a have a double question to ask you. (1)The my system is Linux, but the drivers are destined to Windows OS; (2)I know very well to install drivers in windows OS but not in Linux OS Could you give me any support on this matter? Thanks in advance, r_active_ r_active@ig.com.br |
Is the device "ar8132" for a wireless controller or a NIC controller. Atheros wireless controllers tend to use either the ath5k or ath9k kernel modules.
su Post the results of "lspci -v". If it has a usb interface, then run "lsusb". For a NIC adaptor, I think you need to modprobe the "atl1c" kernel module. e.g.: sudo /sbin/modprobe atl1c Also post the results of "uname -r" so we know which kernel version you are using. Good Luck! |
