Modem - Will it work with Linux?

I have a Toshiba A105-S2712 Laptop with a V.92 Modem that I purchased 5 months ago. I'm reading "LINUX in easy steps" by Mike McGrath. He warns that many computers are supplied with an internal PCI modem that will only work with Windows software. He further states that these so-called "winmodems" are unsuitable for connection to the Internet in Linux. I can't figure out whether or not I have one of these winmodems. Can anyone help? :scratch:
If I do have a winmodem, what is the best sollution?
Thanks;
Rick Gibbons

It's very important for you to visit: http://linmodems.org/ because there you can find their scanmodem tool (to find if your modem is a winmodem); there's info with configuration ways to put some winmodems to work, if yours is one. Excuse that sorry english of mine.
