Yes, pretty much in the previous thread. Read above, post #13, by ferrari. I think that sums things up rather nicely.

But it was a wonderful effort, and renewed my faith in people of these forums.

Yes, definitely go for a hardware modem.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. The linuxant support finished around the time of 2.4/2.6 kernel versions IIRC.

http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/...-installer.php may still work.

I too had purchased a rockwell hardware modem on serial a long time ago for this problem. Took it to goodwill a few months ago with the AT command cheat sheet taped to it.
