I am not familiar with Mandriva but if no one can give you better suggestions you can always go to either one of these sites and use there modem scan tool and check out their drivers. This does not cost you unless you want to work your modem at 56k. I believe the free modem drivers hook at 14k

Use the scan tool mentioned above.

I've done this before on some desktop units.

The only benefit I had was that I have aquired a few hardware modems, and don't bother with the PCI/MoBo Modems any more

yulester you are right if you are using a desktop but if you are using a laptop and on the run it is handy to have the internal soft modem working. Most late distros have two or three different soft modem drivers in their repository. As I say I am not familiar with Mandriva.

Mandriva does - -

Don't recall what modems they support, but I use Mandriva, and Dell's, Toshiba Laptops, and my WhiteBox didn't work with the internals. Ubuntu/Kubuntu and Suse10 didn't either.

I was hoping I could get one to work, but after a certain amount of frustration - - External saves the day.

I know - doesn't work on newer laptops. It's one thing I'm gonna need to find out since I'm in laptop buying mode myself.

It seems this modem causes problems for fedora core 5 also:

http://freshrpms.net/docs/x1/

Didn't work with older versions of Ubuntu either:

http://www.linux-laptop.net/hosted/d...tude-d410.html

This person notes no problems with an older version of Kubuntu, but may not have even tried the modem:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/sh...549/cat/myprod

This link:

http://sputnik.altervista.org/

states that the modem should work if you install the slmodem package.

This link:

http://tuxmobil.org/aopen_openbook1846.html

Describes intsalling the slmodem package in an older version of Mandrake 10.0

This link:

http://www.jlaforums.com/viewtopic.p...=asc&start=165

suggests you may be able to install it using urpmi, if you add the non-free mirrors

I found many kernels including the slmodem driver on this page for mandriva 2008 (non-free, testing):

http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandriv.../Mandriva.html
