Unhappy Modem on Toshiba

I have installed RedHat 8.2 on a Toshiba Satellite 4080 XCDT in dual boot with Win98. (I use this machine as a sand-box.)

Only the second time I installed it would it configure the modem on COM1 correctly.

I then had to re-install, and like first time it wouldn't activate/deactivate automatically when I started webbrowser or mail (Mozilla and Ximian). When deleting and reinstalling the connection it wouldn't even recognize the modem (but it momentarily had contact of sorts). And on restarting the PC it said that it missed localhost.localdomain. Is this a well known problem? What to do to fix it?

I have a satelite 1555CDS and had a similar problem. I was using mandrake 7. What I found was to just go to the local flea market and get a generic pcmcia modem/ethernet card. I have some links for you if you like. send mail to dave@hcubed.org. I can't post urls in messages yet on this board.

I took your advice, in steps :-)

I managed to borrow various PCMCIA cards till I found one that works. There were a few (surprising) failures, but the following is OK: PSION Gold Card (Combine) WAN Global 56k + FAX and an ISDN adapter.
