Not sure if you are still following this thread, but...

I have some VisionPlates that have been sitting around and I figured I would mess around with them again. I've been to your wiki before and noticed it mentioned a customized kernel. I know you haven't done much lately with the wiki, but I was wondering if you still have the kernel. I would be very interested in it if you did.

Hey, yeah I'm still following the thread :) and still monitor the wiki page as well... Have been way too busy to get much new work done on the tablets, but I'm getting very close to picking it up and trying to finish it off.

For the custom kernel. Right now I don't have a clean "copy" of it so to speak. I only had my main development version. Which I had monkeyed with enough to flub up.

However the notes required to rebuild the kernel from scratch are included on the wiki. I was planning on doing a full rebuild of the OS in January (I'm in the middle of moving right now) and then trying to solve the one remaining problem with it which is UDMA handling in the IDE drivers. (right now because of UDMA problems the disk IO is slow and throws kernel errors and timeouts all the time. But once we solve that this custom kernel should be fine tuned for the Visionplate, and pretty rock solid).

I hope that helps. If not, shoot me a message sometime in January and I might have an actual working copy of the kernel with udma fixed by then.

But if you are feeling motivated, try and do the kernel rebuild, and see if you can get it to boot without throwing ide errors, if you can solve the udma issue I can get a full linux OS built based on debian for this thing which will be very well suited to this little tablet.

If your having trouble finding the notes look under the debian install notes.

I know this is a bit out of subject, but this is the only thread I found anywhere that deals with the Hitachi VisionPlate. I just acquired one out of evil-Bay and it didn't come with ac adaptor, and to my surprise the power connector is proprietary (3-pin). Didn't find any information about it anywhere.

Anybody here have a way to know what is the pin-out specification of the power connector? I know it's supposed to be 16V but which pin? I assume another pin is ground. What about the 3rd pin? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

On another subject I have an ancient Gateway Connected thin client as well that has very similar specs to the VisionPlate (not same ac adapter though), and I have the touchscreen driver for Win98 is somebody's interested.

Never mind - I believe I found the answer. Seems that the pin-out is:

I hooked up an old 16V Thinkpad ac adapter I had around in this configuration and the VisionPlate is booting up ok and recharging the battery right now. I'll have to work on a way to hook it up more permanently though, will probably need to change the tip of power adapter to something that plugs into the dc input in the unit.

Now to install something that actually works. I'm not decided yet what OS to go with. Will probably try a couple of flavors of Linux and maybe Win98 too (and eXP if I can find the touchscreen driver for it).
