Mic issue with Acer Aspire One 10" in Ubuntu UNR

I have been looking for a solution to this problem and have been unsuccessful. My Mic does not work with Skype I have made sure that the mic is not on mute in the volume control and also tried to change the audio setting under the Preferences. I have done a complete reinstall and made sure to install medibuntu, restricted extras, keyring, and all codecs. This is just not working. I have tried to download the latest alsa drivers but do not know how to compile them for install or back up the old drivers just in case. Later, It occurred to me that perhaps I should try another app. Sure enough, the mic did not record using other mic supported apps. So that rules out skype as the problem.

Anyone have a solution?

Have you read the Ubuntu Wiki on the Aspire One ?

Front microphone works out-of-the-box. If it fails, check System->Preferences->Sound->Sound Capture is set to "HDA Intel ALC268 Analog(ALSA)" not "ALSA".

Note for Acer AspireOne D250: Microphone doesn't work out of the box. Download alsa-driver-1.0.20 from and compile it with ./configure --with-cards=all (initially microphone in the mixer is muted!) In mixer settings input source should be set to "Mic" (default), not "Front Mic". Still sound subsystem doesn't survive suspend-resume. Ethernet card also doesn't work out of the box for D250. Download AR813X-linux-v1.0.0.8.tar.gz from and install it manually. Ignore gzip warnings about "trailing garbage".
if necessary download alsa source
unzip it and change into the directory with the source

tar xjvf alsa-driver-1.0.20.tar.bz2
cd alsa-driver-1.0.20
sudo apt-get install build-essential module-assistant
m-a update
m-a prepare
./configure --with-cards=all
sudo make install

fixed mic in ubuntu 9.10 unr

I found I didn't need to build alsa drivers. To get the mic working I simply added this line:
options snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire position_fix=1
to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf after ensuring a similar line does not already exist in that file. Save file. Reboot.

The fix was found listed:

The fix described worked on my d250-1719. You may not need position_fix. Try running w/o it.

I hope this helps.

the fix of adding

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

works perfectly to get Skype working on my Acer Aspire D260 running Ubuntu 11.10
the internal microphone works without having to download pulse audio volume controls and fiddle with the input sources and channels.
