Mepis on Acer Ferrari 3400 laptop

I've tried Blag (distro) and now Mepis on my Acer Ferrari 3400 laptop and if I don't keep moving the mouse around when downloading files or getting emails or loading web sites the download stops till I move the mouse pointer again.
Everything else works fine.

The Ferrari has an AMD 64 Mobile Athlon chip.

Can anyone help please?
