Memory Map Digital mapping software and Linux

Hi all,

I'm thinking of purchasing a Datawind UBISurfer Netbook which runs Linux. Does anyone know if I can run Memory Map Digital Mapping software with Linux.

Cheers,

Kev

Well, it is Windows software, so no it won't run it. You might be able to run it under WINE, but as this software appears to connect to a hardware device (serial/USB GPS), your chances of it working properly dropped a few notches. While WINE has improved in leaps and bounds, connecting to hardware devices is still a little shaky.

Not to say it isn't possible, but it certainly won't be an out of the box and up and running experience. You are going to need to play around with it a bit, or try and find alternative software that has a Linux version.

I would try it on my machine, but it looks like you need to have the licensed version to even be able to connect a GPS device to the software, so I wouldn't be able to test the key issue.

Update:

For what it's worth, I was able to install and run the software using the sample maps provided on the site. In general it seems to work well enough, I can see the map and look around it at least.

Memory map and Linux

Hi,

Thanks for the rapid response. That's pretty good news as I only want to use the software to look at the maps and I don't need to connect a GPS to the Netbook.

So did you install the sample maps directly onto the machine or did you have do anything special. Sorry for being a bit dim but I'm completely new to Linux and no nothing about it.

Cheers,

Kev

I'm running Memory Map in a Windows XP guest on a Mandriva 2008.1 host desktop using VirtualBox where it runs without any problems.
I have an Asus Eeepc 1000H running Eebuntu but I haven't tried the same setup, I think it might struggle despite the memory upgrade that I did.

I just installed it through WINE and extracted the sample maps into the directory it indicated.

The program seems to work well enough, though I notice the GUI is a bit glitchy. Some flickering in the menu bars and occasionally the map image super-imposes itself onto any windows you have in front of it. But I'm not running the latest WINE version here, so that might be resolved in later versions (WINE has a very rapid development and release cycle).
