MDK 9.2 on Compaq presario 2100

hi everyone
i'm trying to install mdk 9.2 on my 2100 w/ XP home, but i can't make partitions on it.
i found some infos about that saying compaq NTFS sys was making trouble and the only way to install a dual boot is to format/reinstall w/ 2 partitions
is there any other solutions? i don't really wanna del my xp installation to install linux but i really want to install linux ;)
thx for helping me and sorry if there are some mistakes i'm not english :p

Hey Kyoshiro,
I just got done installing MDK 9.2 on my presario 2100us after several tries. I had the factory image of XP home on the machine and decided to use MDK's NTFS resizer to allow for dual boot. This didn't work, tried it several times and it left my windows installation unusable. I had to load XP without using the quick restore so I could define partitions. I don't know if there is any other way to do it. You could try a program like PowerQuest Partition Magik.

I would suggest backing up your data and reinstalling windows from the XP cd - not the quick restore. You will have a much cleaner install without all the promotional overhead.

I've had other problems with MDK 9.2. After I handled partitioning, the install went fine except x-windows could not be configured because there is no suitable graphics driver. The presario 2100 has an ATI IGP 340 RS200M graphics chip. I installed the newest version of Xfree (4.3) and tried all the ATI divers and the vesa driver but I cannot startx. I had to skip the x-windows configuration or else I had problems.

I now have a working dual boot, but linux only works in text mode. I spend a couple hours a day searching for RS200M drivers but none exist - they are in the works. That is where I am stuck

I hope this helps. Please!!! Let me know how your install goes and when you get to configuring x we can work together on that.

I tried this and didn't work at all, i couldn't make partitions, i don't really know why but i suppose its a pb from compaq :(
for the x-window pb, i think i've read some post about it and the drivers for ATI mobile chips in this forum, but not sure.
I haven't got too much work so i'll look for this & i'll post any ideas here ;)
ciao

I have the same laptop, and I too didn't wanted to delete windows xp , but I coulnd't resize the partition , I've installed Partition magic 7 to do the resize and so I could install linux , but it gave me problems , I tried many things and nothings , so I had to partition the whole drive , I did one partition for windows 21GB and the rest for linux 6GB and 700MB for swap, for a total of 30GB which is my disk drive, and I reinstall windows xp, don't forget to copy the folder SW or something like that which is on c: , cause there are all the drivers so you can reinstall them later, that's what I did.

i've just installed mdk9.2 on my 2100 and got a pb with pcmcia :(

kyoshiro 11-22-2003 09:05 AM

i finally succeeded with my mandrake :)
while installing u juste have to disable pcmcia in the "services" config just before rebooting at the end of the installation (on mdk9.2)
and the graphics are supported without problems
linux powaaa :)

graphics on presario notebook

Still having problems starting x.
Did you use xf86config to configure your video settings?
what Driver did you select.

I also notice that I have a presario 2170us, which might be my problem, I thought all 2100 series would configure similarily, but who knows?

kyoshiro 12-04-2003 02:08 AM

Hi
about X i didn't really configure it, just had to choose the right card during installation (mine is a Radeon U1, or maybe M1)
But my laptop is a 2100 (FR) i don't know if the 2170 is exactly the same
after install i didn't add drivers others than those who where installed during the normal process and it works great
try to see the exact model of your video card it must be in the list of card known by mandrake in the installation
Good luck ;)

I have experienced the same disk partition problem with Mandrake Linux 9.2 on Acer 1353LM. I then tried the ntfsprogs package (found easily in the net) to create the ntfs for the XP, but somehow in the recovery the XP did not like the first partition I created with it - I'll give it yet another try when I have time to. Overall, I hate the lack of control when using these XP recovery cd's.

(Btw, also on this one the X is not working, only the text terminal does, see another thread.)
