Mapping Key functions - AGH

Ok, I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600, with this wierd button combonation. It has two main buttons, for left/right click, only they are one ABOVE another. Wow. Then the scroll buttons are to the left and right of these two. Wow. Well, I got used to it, and under SuSE 9.2 it automatically mapped the scroll buttons to scrolling functions. Now, in Slackware, I have no such luck. My linux-"guru" friend punched in some command that opened a box that would output keys that were being pressed and such. What is this command? (its an X window, with a small white box. When you mouse over it, the actions are listed in the console) So, using that program, nothing happened (outputed) when I hit the scroll buttons. So, what's going on here, and how can I fix this?

I believe the program you might be thinking of is xev. You should be getting output from those buttons when running xev, unless maybe you have the wrong mouse driver loaded. Or maybe you need to edit your XF86Config

Well, the program IS xev - thank you for that

But I am not getting output from those keys! Is there a way to transfer the suse config to the slack config? (It works in suse, but not in slack!) I am using X11, not XFree86 on both ditros. -Bill

Do you mean xorg, rather than xfree. Start by having a look at the xf86config (or equivelent if you are using xorg, sorry dont have it so dont know what it is.) file and see what the difference is between them for your mouse. You "should" be able to copy over the entire file from suse to slackware. I dont believe there would be any reason why it would mess it up, but there may be some obscure reason why you cant. Personly I would just copy over the relevent mouse section.
