Mandrake 9.2 on Alienware Area 51-m
Okay, got a brand new Alienware laptop (so nice, especially since my dad paid) and I want to install Mandrake Linux 9.2 on it. I have the discs, and I boot from Disc 1. Hit enter to install, it loads the kernel, and while going through everything it freezes at the same spot every single time, right after it says
hda: attached ide-disk driver so i waited, and waited, and after two hours it was still there, unresponsive, so I can here, hoping for suggestions. |
Use Redhat or Suse instead of mandrake.
which would u recommend?
Try Fedora.. Suse costs money. Check the Linux on laptops website to see if someone else with your laptop has had problems. If a page doesn't exist then you should make a page for Linux on laptops. :)
well im a complete noob so should i try getting suse froma friend i know that has it or something else?
You could do that. It's a personal choice.
is fedora newbie friendly? ive heard suses YaST program is really good
Fedora is based on RedHat. It is pretty easy to operate. If you get confused on something there are people around to help.
Did you find a page about your laptop on linux for laptops? |
can you gimme a link ive never heard of it
they dont have alienwares
You might want to make a virtual machine and test the distros to see which likes your hardware.

Also document what happens so you can make a page for other Alienware owners.

ill try that out, it will be a while before I get to do it now, i had to send it back, the LCD backlight switch was broke.
