Unhappy Mandrake 10.1 on Sony

hi, I installed Mandrake 10.1 on my Sony VGN-S series laptop but
it failed, something like:

bringing interface eth0 [FAILED]
bringing interface eth1 [FAILED]

so that I could see the wallpaper there but nothing else, no icons, no bars...

can anybody help me?

thanks so much.....

Unhappy another question

I guess there must be something wrong with my Graphic Card configuration,
because the screen is showing partly wallpaper and partly black area, but no
icons at all. The mouse works well, when I move my mouse, I find the wallpaper
can be zoomed in/out but the other parts remain black.......

My Graphic card is Radeon Mobility 9200, I read the Linux on Sony laptop
and find Mandrake could work well with Radeon 9200, could anybody here help
me deal with the graphic card configuration?

Thanks so much......

I have a Sony PCG-K23 if you don't want the eth0 or eth1 to fail while booting up then go to "Configure Your Computer" and then choose "Network & Internet" and then "Manage connections" select the device, then go to options tab and deselect "Start at Boot"... hope this helps, I don't know about your graphics card...

I was looking around, and if you would like to run a UNIX os on your Sony laptop, check out FreeBSD. They have laptop compatability listings and remarks from people who have installed it on their system.

HI, eth1 and eth0 don't have anything to do with your graphics problem. They are just your ethernet interfaces. What they are telling you is that at boot time there is no interface found e.g an adsl modem connected and setup and plugged in to your ethernet socket.

Did you configure the graphical interface when you installed the system? I have just installed 10.1 on a laptop with a radeon card (it's not a sony and it is a different card) and at the summary screen when i looked it said ....Graphics Card: NOT CONFIGURED.

I then just clicked on the Configure button and selected the appropriate parameters. After you have configured it you will be asked to test the configuration. If you have it right you will see a lovely coloured screen eand a box in the middle asking you if it is right (if it isn't you won't see the box). Everything worked perfectly. In fact the graphics seem to work better on 10.1 than they do on win xp which i dual boot with. This is not my imagination as xp is jerky when trying to playback a DVD whereas mandrake plays them flawlessly.

Anyway, you have two options to try.

1. If you didn't check to see if your graphics card was correctly setup on install, just reboot with your 1st install cd and select UPGRADE. It will then quickly run through the install (which it has just done when you installed the first time) finding that there is nothing to upgrade and bring you to the summary screen where you can set your card up properly. You can then quickly tell whether your adjustments are correct by testing the configuration when prompted. The beauty of this is that you can keep trying until you have got it right.

2. You can use the command line to open XFdrake and try to configure the card that way.

I suggest the first way if you dont have any experience with the command line yet

Hope this helps you out a bit

Cheers

hi,I figured this problem out yesterday night.
Well, I think my graphic card works well, I did see that lovely colored screen.
I changed from KDE to GNOME yesterday, then everything went well...
it's so weird! any ideas on that?

Thank you all, billapepper, dsschanze, and J.K... so much.

Glad you got it all worked out.

I don't use Gnome so can't give any ideas on that. The important thing is that it's working.

Happy Linuxing
