Mandrake 10.1 is sluggish on my Toshiba Satellite 1800

Hi everyone.

I just installed Linux Mandrake 10.1 for the first time on my toshiba satellite 1800. It is an 800 mhz celeron with 192 mb ram.

For some reason, everything seems to be running very slow and sluggish. I realize that it could be that I need more ram.

Any thoughts as to what else could potentially be causing this problem?

Thanks,

Tony

Could try a newer version of Mandriva (2006 is good, as long as you uninstall kat), or maybe a lighter distro (Vector looks pretty good, though I haven't tried it myself). Or if you want to stick with Mandrake, and you're using KDE, try a different, less resource-intensive window manager like IceWM (included with Mandrake). How big is your swap partition? Increasing it's size might help a bit, especially with that little ram (Mandriva recommends a min of 256 I think).
