Mandrake 10.1 does not boot after install Compaq Presario

Hi ,
I have installed 10.1 in dual boot with windows XP on
my compaq presario 2000 1.3Gh ,256RAM,4Gbhdd. After the install it would not
boot .I tuned off the APIC from the lilo.conf and also added noapic . Also
inhibited a few demons that were giving me trouble during start-up .
Finally the machine booted .
But Now the monitor has become very very DIM when i connect it to a power source
but is alright when i run the PC on battery. This happens when i am using Windows.

I check for BIOS version mismatch for kernel 2.6 and updated my BIOS to the ones
advised by compaq. But alas no joy !!!

Any help any help would be really apretiated .

thanks .
