Mandrake 10.1 & acpi

Hi all, this is my first post.
I'm posting because i have a problem with my laptop and the mandrake 10.1 configuration...
I've installed the Mandrake 10.1 official (from the internet) and i cannot configure the ACPI.
I searched the Internet for help but i couldn't find something.
My laptop is a Acer travelmate 3201xmi
The bios is phoenix and the kernel I installed (the default) is 2.6.8.1-12mdk

thanks.. :)

I googled acpi and found this: http://www.cpqlinux.com/acpi-howto.html hope it helps :-)

Well I went to the link but the link is for kernel 2.4.19 kernel and I have 2.6
I don't want to downgrade my kernel for installing ACPI.
Is there another way..?

When I did the installation the default was the ACPI to be enabled in the bootloader options, but the system halted with a black screen after choosing the kernel.
So I had to do another installation from the begining with the option ACPI off.
In the bootloader (grub) added the acpi=ht option and now the system works....

I'd like to be able to see how batery I have left in my laptop and maybe reduce the cpu freq if I can...

As for compilation of a kernel i have tried many times but with no results...

If someone have any clues.....
thanks..

The power controls are in control centre

Yesterday I managed to compile a kernel 2.6.10 with acpi enabled.
Now I can see the temperature of the CPU and I think I can change the CPU freq.
I think, because the system decides when the CPU is not needed and reduce the freq.

When I was trying to make the modules_install an error occured and didn't know what was wrong..
Anyway I installed the new kernel in the bootloader and worked fine.
I think I have to make the module battery.o and install it.

Do you know a way..? :Pengy:

Where is the file that tell the kernel which modules to start in the boot..? :Pengy:

And where is the file which tells the "make modules" which modules to make (not .config) :Pengy:

p.s.: now with the new kernel I don't have to manually shut down the laptop (from the button) when the system halts.. cool!:D

Same problem

Hi inglor, I have exactly the same problem as yours. And sounds like you have solved your problem! Please tell me how you solved.

Acer TravelMate 3201XCi, trying to install Mandrake Linux 10.1 with Kernel 2.6.8. It installed without any problems but when I boot it the first time, the computer hangs and saying something wrong with the ACPI, initrd image. As I am only a new Linux user, please tell me how you solved it in some more details. Just treat me as a Linux idiot : )

thanks,

KMK

To run the first time when the mandrake 10.1 is installed you have two options:

1. If you have installed the default bootloader (lilo) then you must make another installation and in the bootloader options disable ACPI
2. If you have installed grub which in my opinion is better bootloader then you can do the following:
when the system starts you must choose a OS. go to the linux row and press e
you now can change the OS options (where is the kernel and what's its options). Go to the first row and add the option acpi=off (or acpi=ht). Enter and then b (to boot).
Now you can boot. but careful this is not permanetly. To do it permanetly you must edit the following file:
/boot/grub/menu.lst
root passwd required.

I hope it helped the problem. Maybe with lilo is another procedure for not making a new install but i don't know it. :)

p.s.: The ACPI won't be enabled until you make a kernel compilation with acpi support. And as I said the ACPI is supported partialy.

yeah, that acpi=ht works for me too. Thanks!
