Low Audio Volume in HP DV5292 HDA Intel
 

Hi,

I am running openSuSE 10.2 in my HP DV5292 EA (Model Specifications: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00716740&cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3216202&dlc=en&lang=en[/url] )

I have an annoying problem with my audio device that my volume is very low in GNU/Linux compared to Windows XP (almost 1/4th of the volume). Well, I am aware that it does not come with sound card driver.

I tried couple of forums and it did improve the performance of my sound device.

I am 6 months to GNU/Linux and not a hacker or pro. I am a learning user. But I tried to solve this problem on various stages of past 6 months, but it didn't work out.

can someone there give me some suggestions?

can you open alsamixer from a terminal? make sure that all channels are raised up sufficiently (say 75%). i was going crazy for awhile, until i realized that I had my PCM channel at 0%. :-D

yes, when I open alsamixer, i have just 3 items.

1. Master (97)
2. PCM (100)
3. Capture (100)

Is it because there is no proper driver? Another one thing I have noticed is that, under windows I am able to watch any video in 5.1, but that's not the case under gnu/linux. it's not able to give more than 2.1

Multimedia is not the problem

But my problem is not with multimedia softwares. I had already enabled to play all types of multimedia files. it's just the audio volume is annoyingly low. I tried everywhere to find a solution. The sound configuration wizard in Yast gives correct description about the sound card:

82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller.
Fix DMA Pointer (0 = auto, 1 = none, 2 = POSBUF, 3 = FIFO size)
etc...


Well, if i have to install proper driver, where can I look for?

I don't run alsa (use kmix) but I think the faces are about the same. You seem to be missing some controls, (speaker vol. - center - surround) (microphone - cd - line - ph - aux) plus the switches.

Hi larry, I guess & agree with you. I miss the surround sound or 3D sound capabilities. It works like depreciated sound card. I do get high volume when I connect to my music system and raise the volume in music system.

But when I switch back to laptop speakers, I get this depreciated sound.

Any suggestion where to look for the solution?

I tried that too, it didn't work out since I was receiving 'Unknown soundcard hda-intel, exiting!' error at some stage and the compilation aborts.

This is the command i issued as it is suggested in the website

/configure --with-cards=hda-intel --with-sequencer=yes;make;make install

I know what it does, but still, I am not a pro to understand the messages.

I tried running configure first and then issue the above command and I get

Sorry I'm not better help but kinda new at this myself. I take it this is a laptop and I don't know if this will work, in terminal enter lspci and then you can give us the model of sound system you have.

are you able to identify something, please let me know. if you can't, just leave it. I've heard openSuSE 10.3 comes with better support for audio devices (next gnu/linux kernel).

I've got the same sound card and the same problem. What's actually wrong is that the drivers for hda-intel that come with the openSUSE kernel do not support it fully. What you need to do is install alsa seperately. Get 1.0.14rc4. Remove all drivers from the openSUSE kernel, and install alsa. That should fix your problem. However, now I'm facing another one. Every now and then, my sound reverts to the same low volume. I have to install the alsa drivers again in order to fix the sound. Any suggestions on why this is happening?

I had also the same issue with my soundcard..

what i did was download the latest kernel version. 2.6.20 or above and recompile the kernel..
this got the problem solved..

Well, I did the same and fixed the problem. Like you I have another weird problem. Sometimes my Sound Module fails to start. About the question you asked, I haven't encountered the problem, but I will search the forms & sites for you. I am working my problem know why the sound module fails to start.

Grab the latest driver from the alsa snaphots, compile and install it. http://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/tiwai...apshot/driver/

After installing run alsaconf as root, and just accept the settings there.

You will end up with headphone ports working correctly. pcm, pcm2, speaker

The volume will increase ten fold.

Hi Thanks for the suggestion. I believe this suggestion should work out, but I have already sorted this annoying problem by switching to Ubuntu Linux since I was not willing to experiment anymore for some short period of time. I will be back to openSuSE 10.3.

Already done that. All that is fixed for SOME time. But like I already said, the sound reverts back to its low volume frequently. I have to install the drivers again and again.
