Lost control over cdrom.

I wen't away to get a snack and when I came back the cdrom was spinning like a mad man. I had no control over it at all.
The eject button on the drive didn't work nor did
Code:

eject
work.

So the only way I could get it to stop was to pull it out.
I have a Dell Latitude C600.

When I jamed it back in I could open it with the button on the drive but that was it.

When I try to mount any cd I get a Input/Output error.
Code:

[root@XXX /]# mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,
or too many mounted file systems

How do I get my cd to work again without a reboot?

Have you tried unmounting it?
