ok so im currently in the market for a laptop the last one i used with linux had issues no matter which distro i used weather it was sound/video or wireless isssues. so now before i get one im doing some reasearch and what other linux users use.
now i understand since the last time i used a laptop drivers have been made reconfigured so im not expecting as much issuses with sound/video and wireless but, if i got a touch screen would it work 100% with the majority of appilcations. becuase if its not going to work correctly i dont see the need for it.
and how good is the intel atom chip experience wise versus the amd equivilent amd neo chip.
basically im really looking for a laptop to replace my intel pentium 4 desktop computer. thank you for your help
All of this laptops will not have a problem running linux inside. I liked this more ASUS A52F-X1 because of its hardware. Linux has all drivers for hardware in the kernel so you don't have to worry about drivers. Today you plug a usb adapter and you use it immidiately!!
ok thnk you for the advice gasdim and dugan. i do like the the think pads but there out of my price range if you noticed the laptops i choose were all under $900. also im thinking about the touch screens mostly becuase they would be more usefull to me but again i dont know the compatiablity it has with linux apps. like is there apps that have been made for linux for touchscreen use.
student loan after tution and fees im left with $911 so im looking to spend about 450 600 at most
Don't know about your distro-Never used it
Have you considered any Dells most seems to work out of the box with most Linux Distros and fall in your price point.
Of your list Acers seems to have the most problems in Linux, the Asus from what have read on linux forums works-One thing i do is take a live DVD to stores and check out computers
Not sure about everybody, but my Acer Aspire One netbook has been running Mandriva 2009-2010.1 for over a year, which I recently upgraded to .01 and haven't had any issues. Everything seems to be working without a hitch, including the webcam & wireless. Only one thing I wasn't able to get working and that was the built-in 3G wireless.
I have had good luck with the newer Ubuntu and Linux Mint (Really like Mint and have swapped over to it exclusively on my laptops) versions detecting everything on a few different laptops:
Dell Inspiron E1705 (Have to plug in wired one time to install restricted Broadcom STA Wireless drivers for my Broadcom card)
Dell Inspiron M700 Everything works
Sony Vaio (two different ones) Everything works
An Old Dell Inspiron 7000 (PII 366, 384Mb Ram) runs XBuntu ok with LXDE. I use a Belkin USB Wireless adapter with this one.
alright. not to bad so i can see that i have my options open when it comes to laptops and linux. but hows the intel atom performance i have heard it was absolute garbage?
