looking to buy a laptop, suggestions?

Im looking to buy a laptop for my new job as a sales rep so theres alot of traveling and appointment management. Im going to be using an all in one printer and a digital camera. What do you guys recommend? What laptops do you guys have and work well? Any single important specification of a new laptop i should be looking for? i.e. battery life, screen size...

BTW i prefer using Ubuntu, but if you guys have horror stories about ubuntu w/ laptops ill look into another gnome based distro.

Take a look at the Laptops section of the LQ HCL. It contains numerous reviews/ratings from your fellow LQ'ers, but personally, I'd recommend an IBM Thinkpad -- J.W.

What websites do you guys think would be good to buy one off of? I know about tigerdirect.com, is there another site i should be looking at?

BTW anyone know if theres a difference between like XGA display and UXGA?

From: http://www.sceptre.com/Products/LCD/...initon_lcd.htm
UXGA: A display with 1200 x 1600 pixel resolution.
SXGA: A display with 1280 x 1024 pixel resolution.
XGA: A display with 1024 x 768 pixel resolution.
SVGA: A display with 800 x 600 pixel resolution.
VGA: A display with 640 x 480 pixel resolution.
I do not think that you would be very happy with an XGA these days, unless you don't do much on your system, as 1024x768 is a bit limiting.

Chad your the man. I was just about to pick out an XGA, thank god i didnt. I really like a high resolution so i woulda been pissed with XGA.
Good lookin out chad.

You could also try Microtel. They sell laptops preloaded with Xandros.

Xandros isn't Gnome-based, but if Linux comes preloaded, you've got to figure the laptop is Linux-compatible.

whatcha think?

They offer an additional 150 off with a 12 month earthlink subscription at a rediculously priced 22.95 a month. Any of you guys out there know of a surefire way to get the 150 off, then screw lowsy earthlink? They got enough money anyways charging an insane 22 bucks for dialup. I pay 29.95 for cable modem here?!?

That microtel one doesnt seem too bad. And like ya said above, its linux compatible. You guys think thats a deal? 1100, is a little above what i wanted to spend but its got the pentium M and the good disply resolution... Whaddyas think? :)

aysiu 09-17-2005 06:19 PM

The page you linked to says it's $1050 before the Earthlink deal. The $150 you appear to save will get you six months of Earthlink dial-up, but it's a twelve-month commitment to Earthlink you need to make. In the end, you'll end up spending $258 on Earthlink minus the $150 you save... for $108 of Earthlink for the year.

I wouldn't go for the Earthlink deal.

mjkelly93 09-17-2005 07:09 PM

Yeah im not going with the earthlink deal. Im going to be traveling constantly so ill have highspeed in the hotels and linux + dialup dont mix. What i was asking was, has anyone ever signed up for the 12 months, got the 150 off, then didnt pay earthlink and got out of that contract? Any disgruntled earthlink employees out there?

BTW this newegg.com site is awesome. Anyone have any other site recommendations?
