Looking forward to using help on this forum

Going to buy this laptop. The chipset is already pretty popular and has had Linux drivers set up for it, right?

m-techlaptops.com/specifications/mtech5600.htm

It's got a new, WIDE angle view screen and some other goodies that will make it good for:

database development
viewing dvd's recorded from tapes I own to teach dance
playing mp3's of CD's I already own to teach dance.

Without any chipset names to go on... the gigabit ethernet onboard may be a headache, it'll be supported, but probably won't come with the install.

The 802.11g card is bound to be a broadcom, if you can get the 802.11b card and ask them before if its a broadcom... that might be better, and if they won't sell you anything but a broadcom card, tell them to stuff it, it'll probably never work. Broadcom's fault, they're being weenies.

The Radeon 9600 might be a bit of a hastle, but poke around here and google and you'll choke on info. 3d and decent 2d aren't going to be that hot out of the box... it'll take some fiddling.

Some laptop sized firewire parts are proprietary, not many... find out post-install.

The 6-in-1 card reader may or may work out of the box, a lot of these are toss-ups also.

Sorry for all of the maybes...

Cheers,

Finegan

Well, I will be SLOW to put Linux on it as I am busy with my master's class and 235.67 other things. But I will work at it slowly. And, I wil ask and search around a lot too.

I have yet to do a compile of anything in LInux. That will be a milestone for me someday!
